Wild Willy Barrett’s French Connection
The group is an interesting mix of French, Irish and English acoustic arrangements – something different, featuring instruments including cello, guitar, Irish pipes, whistles, fiddle and banjo, and a good deal of on stage slightly off the wall banter.
Alongside French singer Aurora Colson, the band features:
John Devine – who was invited to play at Buckingham Palace in the presence of the Queen this year as part of the Irish State Visit – a real testament to his amazing musicianship and mastery of the Uilleann pipes. He has an interesting story to tell about his experience there ….
Wild Willy Barrett, whose performances with John Otway in the 70s are still being shown on UK TV as well as a memorable clip on the Old Grey Whistle Test which was good enough to make ‘Best of’ DVD. As you know, Willy is a talented multi-instrumentalist playing acoustic guitar, fiddle, balalaika and banjo amongst other things.
Mary Holland – cellist, who was recruited to join the band whilst playing cello at a festival with a troupe of traditional belly dancers.
Support is by Martyn Barker a guitarist, songwriter and singer from Yorkshire. He writes songs about everyday life and travels around the country sharing them either with his group The Tea Band or as a solo performer with his acoustic guitar.
Martyn will be performing solo on this gig, fingerpicking on his acoustic guitar and singing his own folky blues with a smidgen of Yorkshire thrown in too.
