Barton Muse presents…
Poet Gordon Wilson’s historical, gripping and lyrical account records the experiences of apprentices in the C19th ruthless, dangerous Grimsby fishing industry. Young boys were recruited from workhouses, orphanages, charitable institutions and city streets to crew the fishing boats which brought the wealth but also disgrace to the World’s premier fishing port. Whilst a few boys flourished, others endured abuse, misuse, and frequent death. Three Parliamentary Enquiries into the misery they endured made headlines in newspapers and magazines of the day, shamefully to little effect.
Merlin’s Keep brings poignant song settings to the poems that sensitively complement the narrative with energy and emotion.
